Galle Fort is in the process of receiving a much needed facelift with major repairs and improvements being carried out under the Strategic City Development Programme, funded by the World Bank. The cost of this project is about Rs. 600 million.
The Rampart wall of more than 2 ½ km in length is being fully conserved and repairs are also being carried out to the 14 bastions and the underground gunpowder magazines. Two of the main bastions, viz., the Sun Bastion and the Star Bastion are to be converted into galleries, displaying paintings and statues depicting the colonial history of Galle. The entire rampart area is to be turfed and landscaped with paved walking paths. A monument lighting scheme will also be installed.
This project is due to be completed by the middle of next year. After these historical galleries are opened to the public, it will be undoubtedly be a memorable experience to local and foreign visitors.
